Email from School Principals
Subject: Yukon Education sexual health curriculum Dear parents, caregivers and families: As conversations around sexual health education and sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) inclusivity continue to be a point of focus in communities across the country, we want to make sure that you are fully informed about what and how we are teaching our students. In Yukon schools, there is a mandatory Physical and Health Education curriculum from kindergarten to Grade 10. This web page gives a brief overview of that curriculum. Our educators use a wide range of resources to teach students about sexual health, gender, and sexual identity. They also receive thorough training about the best ways to teach these topics. If you would like more information about the resources we use please contact your child’s teacher or email [email protected]. Today we also want to assure all of you that our curriculum is thoroughly reviewed. All material is age-appropriate, and does not include graphic material. Yukon’s curriculum, resources, and professional learning for educators follow the department’s Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Policy (SOGI) policy, which promotes diversity in our school communities. You may have heard a recent announcement that the Department of Education will be implementing the SOGI 123 program. It’s important for everyone to understand that this program is not school curriculum. It is a set of tools and resources for teachers, to help us create safer and more inclusive schools for all students. If you have any concerns about our curriculum, or about our school’s inclusive environment, please reach out to me. I am always open to constructive conversations. As always, your child's safety and education are our top priorities. Regards, Jeff Cressman Jack Hulland Elementary School |
